4" to 2" Taper is suitable for most applications.
5" to 3" Taper will save more on energy and is stronger. If your spa is larger than 96" across the hinged area, we recommend the 6" to 4" due to the added strength of dual aluminum c-channels pictured above. Understanding Spa Cover Construction:
R-Value is a measurement of the resistance to heat transfer for materials like the fiberglass insulation in your house or the insulating foam in our spa covers. In theory, the higher the R-value, the greater the heat retention and, heat retention is the primary function of any spa cover.
Foam Density is a specific measurement of how much weight in pounds polyurethane foam can handle per cubic foot. This density rating tells you the strength of the foam. The higher the number the longer the foam will last, the higher the insulation value it will have, the more payload it can handle like snow and the less water vapor it will absorb.
Expanded PolyStyrene Foam covers gain weight over time even though it is a closed-cell bead foam sealed in a vapor barrier. Air in between the beads will be displaced with water. Here's why, the difference in temperature between the water in your hot tub and the ambient temperature outside produces a pressure that forces the water vapor up into the foam core. Once there, the water condensates back into its liquid form and is trapped forever. In order to return that water to gaseous form to allow the smaller water molecules to escape from the foam, you would have to expose the foam to a heat source that would exceed the melting point of the foam. An absorption volume of a particular EPS foam is dependent on its Foam Density or pounds of bead per cubic foot (pcf). The more bead you have per cubic foot, the less room in between the bead gets waterlogged. This is why we recommend 2 lb. density foam over 1.5 lb. density foam when water absorption is your primary replacement concern.
